Midnight in the Garden of Electric Dreams: Depictions of the American South in the Age of Cyberspace

Mobile Bay 3

Saturday May 28, 2022 - 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm

This panel looks to juxtapose big 90's sci-fi and even Romcoms that centered on cyberpunk/dotcom boom, such as T2, Demolition Man, Johnny Mnemonic, the Matrix, even You've Got Mail, etc., but at the same time any film set in the South was backward and trapped in the past, such as My Cousin Vinny, Forrest Gump, Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, and A Time to Kill. This panel will look to uncover why popular imagination outside our region seems to always gravitate toward the same one-note aesthetic despite the rapidly advancing world everywhere else, even going as far as asking: are these depictions fair and deserved, given our often dreary history?
