Kaiju films have always been a direct reflection of humanity’s perils and the consequences of our actions as a species. From 1954, with the release of the original Gojira and its introspective examination of the effects of nuclear war, to Shin Godzilla in 2016, where the Kaiju has become a representation of natural disaster, this seminar will deep dive into the cultural relevance of Kaiju. It will explore how these creatures are avatars for humanity’s dilemmas and why they are more important than ever before.
