Hiroyuki Imaishi - How Top Tier Anime is Made

Anime Ohio Panel Room (Rooms 101-105)

Saturday June 24, 2023 - 5:00 pm to 5:45 pm

The goal of this panel is to show its audience what exactly makes Hiroyuki Imaishi’s kick-ass anime, so kick-ass. Much like the works of Imaishi, this panel is big, bold, and fun, but will also leave its audience having learned something new. Throughout the panel, I discuss Imaishi’s varied roles from Animator to Storyboard Artist, to Director. On the animation side, we’ll cover the 12 animation principles, and hone in on the key principles that can be found in Imaishi’s works (squash & stretch, anticipation, timing, and exaggeration). We even break down frame-by-frame a shot from Kill la Kill that Imaishi key animated. On the directorial side of things, I discuss the Hiroyuki Imiashi directorial principles in which we’ll focus on High-Action and Imagination, as well as his relationship with stylized vs simplified works. After viewing this panel, the audience will walk away having learned more about the thought that goes into creating anime like Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, PROMARE, Cyberpunk Edgerunners and more.
