Panel 5

Saturday July 29, 2023 - 5:45 pm to 6:45 pm

Doujinshi culture has been a major component in the creative community in Japan. A counterpart to the public and mainstream commercial publishing, the doujinshi realm enjoyed greater creator freedom, a limited distribution, and more intimate community. This dichotomy has through a rapid transition in the last 10 years, with the Japanese creative landscape of manga, anime, and video game fandom looking very different in the post-Covid era. This presentation speculates how the Japanese anime, manga, video game fandom has shifted from a commercial/doujinshi platform dichotomy to a spectrum that encompasses a large scale public/open marketplace versus smaller subculture communities which are more private/closed.
