Side Sword to Rapier: An Evolution

From the mid-1500’s to late 1600’s, the elegant rapier became the most popular civilian sword of the era. This class examines the early origins and evolution of fencing systems over time. From the sidesword systems of the 1500’s, we will build to the more thrust-oriented weapon and texts of the 1600’s. The class will be a mix of lecture and technique training. . A timeline of historical sources will be given as a handout for reference. Please bring a rapier or sidesword, light gloves, and a fencing mask. Some loaner swords will be available.
