Continental Room

Saturday May 27, 2017 - 2:00 pm to 3:15 pm

The Path to Compassion Dr. Doty discusses his challenging childhood of pain, despair and shame and how a chance meeting with a woman in a magic shop changed the trajectory of his life. Through this meeting he learned a set of mental exercises that allowed him to change how he saw the world and more importantly how the world saw him. And through these exercises fundamentally rewire his brain. This rewiring of his brain allowed him to understand the power of self-compassion and, as importantly, the power of compassion. This transformation allowed him to ultimately become a professor of neurosurgery at Stanford, a successful entrepreneur and the founder of the leading center in the world focused on the neuroscience of compassion of which the Dalai Lama is the founding benefactor. His story is told in his New York Times bestselling memoir, Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon’s Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart. Dr. Doty’s memoir has received endorsements from many of the world’s spiritual and religious leaders including the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Amma.
