For as long as American youngsters have read comic books, adults have fretted about the effects they have on the young mind. How did a movement of serious and well-meaning adults concerned about children being exposed to violence, sex, and violent sex give way to a censorship regime that: sought to reinforce the political and social norms of the era; continued for decades after the panic that spawned it subsided; and once prevented the publication of a story because it featured a Black astronaut?
